📄 Required documents

Which documents are needed to rent a vehicle?

To rent a vehicle at Avis Bora Bora, the primary driver must present:

  • A valid original driving licence (category B for cars)
  • A credit card in the primary driver's name (for the security imprint)
  • Cash in XPF (Pacific francs) is also accepted

For foreign nationals, an international driving permit may be required depending on your country of origin.

Drivers over 70 who are resident in French Polynesia: the Land Transport Department requires a medical certificate of fitness to drive. This requirement does not apply to non-resident visitors.

What is the minimum age to rent?

For vehicles that require a licence, the driver must be at least 21 years old and have held their licence for at least 1 year.

A young driver option (under 25) is available with a supplement of 1,700 XPF per day (12 days maximum), for the Economy and Automatic categories only. The excess is then 500,000 XPF and the Enhanced Protection SCDW is not available.

For licence-free vehicles, the minimum age is 18, with a valid identity document.

🛡️ Insurance & protections

Are insurance and protections included in the price?

Yes. All our rentals include third-party liability insurance, which covers third parties, and the Standard Protection, under which Avis bears damage to the vehicle and its theft.

However, an excess remains the renter's responsibility in case of an incident:

  • 100 000 XPF — E-Bike
  • 200 000 XPF — Economy, Scooter, Fun Car, E-Crossover
  • 250 000 XPF — Automatic, SUV Manual, 7-Seater, Van 3m³, Minimoke
  • 280 000 XPF — SUV Comfort
  • 300 000 XPF — SUV Premium, 9-Seater Minibus
  • 350 000 XPF — SUV Hard Top

Two optional protections complete the Standard Protection:

  • Enhanced Protection SCDW (excess waiver) — removes the excess in case of an accident or vehicle theft
  • Ultimate Protection — SCDW add-on covering tires & wheels, glass breakage and loss or theft of keys
In which cases do the protections not apply?

The protections only apply if the rental terms and conditions are respected. They are notably void in the following cases:

  • Driving on mountain roads, unpaved tracks, trails or beaches — our vehicles are strictly reserved for the ring road and paved roads of the island. The road up to the antenna (Mount Popoti) is expressly excluded, even though it is paved: its gradient is too steep for our vehicles
  • Vehicle immersion in water (lagoon, ford, submerged beach, salt water) — regardless of water level
  • Driver not declared in the contract
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Driving licence expired, suspended or not valid for the rented vehicle
  • Theft of the vehicle when the keys cannot be returned
  • Commercial use (paid passenger transport, taxi)

These exclusions apply to all protections (Standard, Enhanced SCDW and Ultimate). If these conditions are violated, the renter loses the benefit of the excess: they owe the cost of repairs or, if the vehicle is stolen or beyond repair, its replacement value, plus towing, expert assessment, administrative and immobilisation fees (15 days maximum). The full list is in Article 9.5 of the terms and conditions.

📋 Full terms and conditions are available on the booking page and at contract signature.

What happens in case of an accident?

In case of an accident:

  1. Contact our office immediately
  2. Fill in an accident report if another vehicle is involved
  3. Take photos of the damage
  4. Our team will guide you through all administrative steps

The excess remains your responsibility unless you have subscribed to the Enhanced Protection SCDW. Our damage handling is fair and transparent, based on verifiable evidence.

What is the difference between the Enhanced Protection SCDW and the Ultimate Protection?

The Standard Protection is included in every rental, with third-party liability insurance. Two optional protections extend it:

  • The Enhanced Protection SCDW (excess waiver) removes the excess in case of accident, damage or vehicle theft (an accident report is required for any accident with a third party).
  • The Ultimate Protection adds, on top of SCDW, coverage for wheels & tyres, glass breakage and key loss or theft.

The Ultimate Protection can only be subscribed in addition to the Enhanced Protection SCDW. An administrative fee of 4,000 XPF remains due in case of damage or theft, whatever the protection. Vehicle theft is only covered if the keys are returned to Avis.

💳 Deposit

Is there a deposit to pay?

The security deposit takes the form of a card imprint: no amount is debited.

Your card imprint is encrypted and secured in our system. It is only used in case of:

  • Damage noted on the vehicle
  • Unpaid amount
  • Traffic fine (highway code violation)

It is deleted from our system at the end of the rental without incident.

Prepaid cards: as an imprint is not possible, the deposit amount is debited at pick-up and refunded when the vehicle is returned without incident.

🚌 Transfers

Are transfers included?

For any rental of 6,000 XPF or more (total of the vehicles rented), and for all scooters, the transfer between your accommodation on the main island and our office is free, both ways. Below that amount, the transfer at pick-up costs 2,000 XPF.

  • Hotels, guest houses and villas on the main island of Bora Bora ✅
  • Motu accommodations (Four Seasons, St. Regis, Le Bora Bora…) ❌ (require a boat-taxi, not included)

At pick-up: select your pick-up location when booking and we come and get you. At return: the transfer is arranged directly at the office when you drop off the vehicle.

✈️ Airport & Cruises

How do I pick up my vehicle from the airport?

Bora Bora airport is located on a motu (islet). Free airline shuttle boats take passengers to the Vaitape wharf on the main island.

Our Vaitape office is only 30 metres from where these shuttles arrive — you can't miss us!

How do I get to the office from the cruise wharf?

Our Vaitape office is 50 metres from where the cruise tenders arrive. No transfer is necessary — you come straight on foot.

We offer half-day (4h) and full-day rental packages, ideal for cruise passengers.

📅 Booking & Cancellation

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes. For a booking paid online, in full or with a deposit:

  • Cancellation 48 hours or more before pick-up: free.
  • Cancellation within 48 hours of pick-up: 3 days of rental are retained (or the full amount if the rental is shorter than 3 days). If only a deposit was paid, the difference remains due.
  • No-show without cancellation: no refund.

For a booking without prepayment, a no-show without cancellation (24 hours after the scheduled time) incurs a 5,000 XPF fee.

You can cancel online through the “Manage my booking” link in your confirmation email, or by writing to contact@avis-borabora.com.

What happens if I return the vehicle before the end of the rental?

In case of early return, unused days are refunded, subject to:

  • A minimum 48-hour notice
  • A processing fee of 1,500 XPF
Can I return the vehicle outside office hours?

Yes, late returns to the office are possible provided you subscribe to the fuel included and Enhanced Protection SCDW options. The vehicle remains your responsibility until the office reopens.

Pick-ups outside office hours are also possible thanks to a key drop in a coded padlock, for a flat fee of 2,000 XPF. Contact us to arrange this.

📍 Offices

Where are your offices located?

We have two offices on the island:

  • Vaitape — Town centre, directly on the main wharf (30 m from the airport shuttles, 50 m from cruise tenders). Open 7/7 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Matira — South of the island, close to Matira beach and hotels. Open 7/7 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

You can return your vehicle at any of our offices, regardless of where you picked it up.

What are your opening hours?

Both offices are open 7 days a week:

  • Vaitape office: 8:00 am — 5:00 pm (pick-ups until 6:30 pm depending on flights)
  • Matira office: 8:30 am — 5:00 pm

We can arrange pick-ups and returns outside these hours on request. Contact us.

🚗 Vehicles

Is a driving licence required for Fun Cars and scooters?

Here are the rules by vehicle type:

  • 🚗 B licence required — Economy, Automatic, SUV Manual, SUV Comfort, SUV Premium, SUV Hard Top, 7-Seater, 9-Seater Minibus, Van 3m³, Minimoke, E-Crossover
  • ⚡ No licence required — E-Bike, Scooter, Fun Car
Is mileage limited?

No, mileage is unlimited on all our vehicles. As Bora Bora is roughly 32 km around, you won't have any surprise.

Are the vehicles air-conditioned?

Air-conditioned vehicles: Economy, Automatic, SUV Manual, SUV Comfort, SUV Premium, SUV Hard Top, 7-Seater, 9-Seater Minibus, Van 3m³, Fun Car, E-Crossover.

Open vehicles, without air conditioning: E-Bike, Scooter, Minimoke. The island breeze makes them pleasant to drive.

Do you offer 125cc scooters? Can two people ride together?

We only offer 50cc scooters (Peugeot Tweet model), which is perfectly suited to Bora Bora for two reasons:

  • 🏝️ The maximum speed limit on the island is 60 km/h, and large sections of the road are limited to 40 km/h.
  • 🛵 A 50cc is therefore more than enough to keep up with traffic — a 125cc would bring little real benefit.

Can two people ride on a 50cc? Yes, absolutely. The Peugeot Tweet has a load capacity of around 180 kg, so two adults can ride together comfortably, including on the island's hills.

💡 A reminder: 50cc scooters can be driven without a licence (BSR recommended).

How do the electric Fun Cars work?

Our electric Fun Cars (Eli Zero and E-Moke) are recharged at night thanks to our solar panels. They are handed over with a full battery and can cover the whole island without any issue.

They are silent, eco-friendly, and let you explore Bora Bora in a unique way — the Eli Zero can even be driven without a licence!

Electric vehicle range (varies with driving style and air-conditioning use):

  • ⚡ Eli Zero: between 60 and 100 km
  • ⚡ E-Moke: between 170 and 235 km
  • 🚲 E-bike: between 70 and 120 km (also depends on the assistance level)

As a reference, Bora Bora's loop road is only about 32 km — easily covered by all our vehicles.

💡 Good to know: you can return the vehicle without a full battery — no need to recharge before drop-off. However: if the battery reaches 0 %, a recovery fee will be charged to bring the vehicle back to the office.
