📄 Required documents

Which documents are needed to rent a vehicle?

To rent a vehicle at Avis Bora Bora, the primary driver must present:

  • A valid original driving licence (category B for cars)
  • A credit card in the primary driver's name (for the security imprint)
  • Cash in XPF (Pacific francs) is also accepted

For foreign nationals, an international driving permit may be required depending on your country of origin.

Drivers over 70: the French Polynesia Land Transport Department requires a medical certificate of fitness to drive.

What is the minimum age to rent?

The minimum age to rent is 21 years with a valid driving licence.

A young driver option (21 to 24 years old) is available with a supplement of 700 XPF per day.

🛡️ Insurance

Is insurance included in the price?

Yes, comprehensive insurance is included in all our rentals. It covers vehicle damage and third-party liability.

However, an excess remains the renter's responsibility in case of an incident:

  • 200,000 XPF for economy vehicles (Panda, scooters, Fun Cars)
  • 250,000 XPF for SUVs and family cars (Duster, Lodgy, Clio, Rav-4)
  • 350,000 XPF for premium vehicles (Wrangler, Boxer)

Two options can extend this base insurance:

  • SCDW (excess waiver) — removes the excess in case of an accident
  • Ultimate Cover — extension covering tires & wheels, glass breakage, key loss and vehicle theft
In which cases does the insurance not apply?

Insurance only covers incidents if the rental terms and conditions are respected. It is notably void in the following cases:

  • Driving on mountain roads, unpaved tracks, trails or beaches — our vehicles are strictly reserved for the ring road and paved roads of the island
  • Vehicle immersion in water (lagoon, ford, submerged beach, salt water) — regardless of water level
  • Driver not declared in the contract
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Violation of traffic laws
  • Commercial use (paid passenger transport)

These exclusions apply to all insurance levels (base insurance, SCDW and Ultimate Cover). If these conditions are violated, the renter is liable for the full amount of damages, with no excess cap.

📋 Full terms and conditions are available on the booking page and at contract signature.

What happens in case of an accident?

In case of an accident:

  1. Contact our office immediately
  2. Fill in an accident report if another vehicle is involved
  3. Take photos of the damage
  4. Our team will guide you through all administrative steps

The excess remains your responsibility unless you have subscribed to the SCDW option. Our damage handling is fair and transparent, based on verifiable evidence.

What is the difference between SCDW and Ultimate Cover?

Base insurance is included in every rental. Two options can extend it:

  • SCDW (excess waiver) removes the excess in case of a collision.
  • Ultimate Cover adds, on top of SCDW, coverage for tires & wheels, glass breakage, key loss and vehicle theft.

Coverage summary:

Type of incidentBase+ SCDW+ Ultimate

Ultimate Cover can only be subscribed in addition to SCDW.

💳 Deposit

Is there a deposit to pay?

No, no deposit is taken at Avis Bora Bora.

We only perform a credit card imprint, encrypted and secured in our system. No amount is debited when the vehicle is picked up.

This imprint is only activated in case of:

  • Damage noted on the vehicle
  • Unpaid amount
  • Traffic fine (highway code violation)

It is released (deleted from our system) at the end of the rental without incident.

🚌 Transfers

Are transfers included?

For any rental of 6,000 XPF or more, we provide free transfers from your accommodation on the main island to the office, and back.

  • Hotels, guest houses and villas on the main island of Bora Bora ✅
  • Motu accommodations (Four Seasons, St. Regis, Le Bora Bora…) ❌ (require a boat-taxi, not included)

Simply select your pick-up location when booking.

✈️ Airport & Cruises

How do I pick up my vehicle from the airport?

Bora Bora airport is located on a motu (islet). Free airline shuttle boats take passengers to the Vaitape wharf on the main island.

Our Vaitape office is only 30 metres from where these shuttles arrive — you can't miss us!

How do I get to the office from the cruise wharf?

Our Vaitape office is 50 metres from where the cruise tenders arrive. No transfer is necessary — you come straight on foot.

We offer half-day (4h) and full-day rental packages, ideal for cruise passengers.

📅 Booking & Cancellation

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes, bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before the rental start.

Beyond that, cancellation fees may apply. Contact us for any special situation.

What happens if I return the vehicle before the end of the rental?

In case of early return, unused days are refunded, subject to:

  • A minimum 48-hour notice
  • A processing fee of 1,500 XPF
Can I return the vehicle outside office hours?

Yes, late returns to the office are possible provided you subscribe to the fuel included and SCDW insurance options.

Pick-ups outside office hours are also possible thanks to a key drop in a coded padlock. Contact us to arrange this.

📍 Offices

Where are your offices located?

We have two offices on the island:

  • Vaitape — Town centre, directly on the main wharf (30 m from the airport shuttles, 50 m from cruise tenders). Open 7/7 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Matira — South of the island, close to Matira beach and hotels. Open 7/7 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

You can return your vehicle at any of our offices, regardless of where you picked it up.

What are your opening hours?

Both offices are open 7 days a week:

  • Vaitape office: 8:00 am — 5:00 pm (pick-ups until 6:30 pm depending on flights)
  • Matira office: 8:30 am — 5:00 pm

We can arrange pick-ups and returns outside these hours on request. Contact us.

🚗 Vehicles

Is a driving licence required for Fun Cars and scooters?

Here are the rules by vehicle type:

  • 🚗 Cars (Panda, Clio, Duster, Lodgy, Rav-4, Wrangler) — B licence required
  • Eli Zero (Electric Fun Car limited to 45 km/h) — No licence
  • E-Moke (Electric Fun Car) — B licence required
  • 🛵 50cc scooter (Tweet) — No licence (BSR recommended)
  • 🚲 Bike and e-bikeNo licence
  • 🚌 9-seat minibus (Boxer) — B licence is sufficient
Is mileage limited?

No, mileage is unlimited on all our vehicles. As Bora Bora is roughly 32 km around, you won't have any surprise.

Are the vehicles air-conditioned?

All our petrol-engine vehicles are air-conditioned. Fun Cars and scooters are open (no air conditioning, but the island breeze makes them pleasant to drive).

Do you offer 125cc scooters? Can two people ride together?

We only offer 50cc scooters (Peugeot Tweet model), which is perfectly suited to Bora Bora for two reasons:

  • 🏝️ The maximum speed limit on the island is 60 km/h, and large sections of the road are limited to 40 km/h.
  • 🛵 A 50cc is therefore more than enough to keep up with traffic — a 125cc would bring little real benefit.

Can two people ride on a 50cc? Yes, absolutely. The Peugeot Tweet has a load capacity of around 180 kg, so two adults can ride together comfortably, including on the island's hills.

💡 A reminder: 50cc scooters can be driven without a licence (BSR recommended).

How do the electric Fun Cars work?

Our electric Fun Cars (Eli Zero and E-Moke) are recharged at night thanks to our solar panels. They are handed over with a full battery and can cover the whole island without any issue.

They are silent, eco-friendly, and let you explore Bora Bora in a unique way — the Eli Zero can even be driven without a licence!

Electric vehicle range (varies with driving style and air-conditioning use):

  • Eli Zero: between 60 and 100 km
  • E-Moke: between 170 and 235 km
  • 🚲 E-bike: between 70 and 120 km (also depends on the assistance level)

As a reference, Bora Bora's loop road is only about 32 km — easily covered by all our vehicles.

💡 Good to know: you can return the vehicle without a full battery — no need to recharge before drop-off. However: if the battery reaches 0 %, a recovery fee will be charged to bring the vehicle back to the office.
